Back in April I wrote about President Obama living in his Strength Zone as he campaigned for the leadership of his party and then as he competed for votes in the race for president. He realized that his biggest strength was in his ability to communicate clearly, charismatically and persuasively.
However, he did not win this race himself….he had assembled an excellent team of communicators that used the latest tools, technologies and techniques. In fact, they were so effective in their approach to marketing, branding and communicating that in the March 2009 issue of Fast Company his team was listed as the world’s most innovative company! They beat out companies like Google, Hulu, Apple, Intel, Pure Technologies, Wuxi PharmaTech, Amazon and Ideo!
Obama and his team realized that if he was going to be successful he had to use his strength of communication and get his powerful message out in all forms of media to as many demographics as possible. In addition to the typical speeches, public appearances, TV, radio, print media, debates, town hall meetings and other forms of traditional media, he and his team used;
- A dedicated social networking website www.mybarackobama.com (over 2 million profiles)
- YouTube videos (110 million views by election day)
- MySpace fan page (100,000 followers)
- Facebook,(3.2 million supporters)
- Other social networking sites like BlackPlanet and AsianAve
- Obama Blog
- Text messaging to supporters (1 million people signed up to receive these)
Obama’s team rallied around his Strength Zone and built a communication machine that powered him through to the President of the United States.
So what are you going to do with your Strength Zone? Defining and living in your Strength Zone is critical to your success no matter what your role in life. There is no telling what you can accomplish if you follow this simple little strategy!
