Talent Strength Zone

2009-05-31 20:18:22

What are talents? Why are they important? What unique talents do you possess? How do you define your talents?

According to Gallup Organization’s Buckingham and Clifton in “Now, Discover Your Strengths”, a talent is a naturally recurring pattern of thought feeling or behavior. Some examples of talent are singers with perfect pitch, musicians who play by ear without sheet music, the speed of a sprinter, or the grace and finesse of a ballet dancer. These are all talents, although the talents that we are talking about here are not focused on the physical as much as they are focused on the cerebral.

For example, one of the 34 Talent themes identified by the Gallup organization is “Analytical”. A person with this talent is always digging into data to validate theories, statements and thoughts. The data has to prove the point being made. Or how about the WOO talent, Winning Others Over. A person with this talent is energized by meeting new people and forming friendships with these people.

Now, just because you have a talent in a particular area doesn’t mean that you don’t have to work at this talent to fully develop. It just means that you find this area easiest to work in (and probably more enjoyable) than other areas. A good example of raw talent is Michael Jordan. Perhaps the best athlete to ever live, Jordan’s raw talent far surpassed the developed talent of many National Basketball Association players. However, the thing that made Michael Jordan really stand out was that he recognized his strengths and worked hard to develop them – to the point that on the court, he became an almost unstoppable force. Each week, he spent many hours developing his skills in the area of his talent. He would practice shooting, dunking, passing, and dribbling for hours, even after practice when the rest of the team had left. In contrast, Mickey Mantle – one of the best baseball players of all time – greatly limited his effectiveness by not capitalizing on his talents. Mantle was well-known for his drinking binges and his aversion to practice in the off-season. Most baseball experts agree that Mantle never achieved his full potential. He was expected to surpass players like Joe DiMaggio and Babe Ruth. It never happened because Mantle did not develop his talents. He relied on his raw talent and a minimal amount of practice. In doing this, he limited his potential.

The key to success is to identify your talents and then build on these talents by developing skills and gaining knowledge in these talent areas. You can use skills and knowledge to improve in an area of strength, but skills are not talents, nor can knowledge about a subject be called a talent. Anyone can gain knowledge or acquire skills in any area, regardless of their natural talents, but no one can become talented in a particular area unless raw, undeveloped talent is already present.

There are a number of tools available to help you determine your top talents. However, it is recommended that the Gallup Organization’s StrengthsFinder tool be used due to the vast amount of research and development that has gone into this tool.

Strength Zone Reflection

2009-05-25 13:07:25

At the end of each day, reflect on how you have used your Strength Zone® successfully.

Start by identifying every situation that went well for you during the day. Be very detailed in this process. Don’t just list things like “the drive to work this morning was smooth.” Go deep! Stretch your thinking!

Maybe you completed a project today and the completion process went extremely well. Maybe you started a project today and kicking off this project went well and was very energizing. Perhaps you were able to successfully deal with a tough HR issue or an aggressive client or maybe you made 10 cold calls that went extremely well out of the 20 calls that you made today. Maybe you met with a client and sorted out a sales order that went wrong or you provided some creative insight for a website, book or advertising campaign. Whatever happened, list it out with some details.

Then ask yourself why did it go well? How did I feel? What actions did I take that I did or didn’t take in the past? How did I apply my strengths and what were the specific outcomes. What did I avoid doing that I might have done in the past?

Now ask yourself, “Can I leverage this knowledge to take advantage of my strengths in other areas of my life?”

Use the output of this reflective thinking to help you redefine your approach to each role in your life to take advantage of these insights and your Strength Zone®.

Strength Zone versus Comfort Zone

2009-05-18 11:19:57

Recently I have heard some people talking about (and read some articles) on how you shouldn't live in your Strength Zone because this means that you are really living in your comfort zone and, if you are doing this, then you are not really stretching yourself……and if you are not stretching yourself then you will never grow or learn new things. I tend to disagree with this train of thought and here is why:

I believe your comfort zone and your strength zone are two very different things. I think that everyone should always stretch themselves by doing things that they haven't done before (outside your comfort zone) and by learning and growing constantly. However, you should be doing this by leveraging your strengths into new areas rather than trying to develop new strengths that are outside your Strength Zone. Remember that your strengths are a combination of your values, personality and talents and are innate abilities…..things that you are naturally gifted at.

For example, I used to play guitar and, although I mastered the mechanics of guitar playing, I was far from gifted and it certainly was not part of my Strength Zone. Now if I were to spend a lot of time and effort practicing guitar I would get better but at best I would be like a "below average Karaoke singer" and , other than having a lot of fun, I would never develop to the point where people would buy my CDs or pay to see me perform.

On the flip side, if I am good at business processes and structure, I can take this strength and apply it to a different industry than I am familiar with or in a charitable organization or a community association. I believe I would add value in these areas if I worked in my Strength Zone but I would definitely be stretched way outside my comfort zone.

I am not saying that you should not try new things that you have never done before (Karaoke, guitar, skydiving, snorkeling, etc.) because these are good growing opportunities and you can have a ton of fun. What I am saying is that when it comes to a life endeavor - a major effort in your life - everyone should strive to understand their strengths and then work to leverage these strengths into everything you do.

So what are you going to do with your Strength Zone? Defining and living in your Strength Zone is critical to your success no matter what your role in life. There is no telling what you can accomplish if you follow this simple little strategy!

Obama's Communication Machine

2009-05-09 16:20:49

Back in April I wrote about President Obama living in his Strength Zone as he campaigned for the leadership of his party and then as he competed for votes in the race for president. He realized that his biggest strength was in his ability to communicate clearly, charismatically and persuasively.

However, he did not win this race himself….he had assembled an excellent team of communicators that used the latest tools, technologies and techniques. In fact, they were so effective in their approach to marketing, branding and communicating that in the March 2009 issue of Fast Company his team was listed as the world’s most innovative company! They beat out companies like Google, Hulu, Apple, Intel, Pure Technologies, Wuxi PharmaTech, Amazon and Ideo!

Obama and his team realized that if he was going to be successful he had to use his strength of communication and get his powerful message out in all forms of media to as many demographics as possible. In addition to the typical speeches, public appearances, TV, radio, print media, debates, town hall meetings and other forms of traditional media, he and his team used;
- A dedicated social networking website www.mybarackobama.com (over 2 million profiles)
- YouTube videos (110 million views by election day)
- MySpace fan page (100,000 followers)
- Facebook,(3.2 million supporters)
- Other social networking sites like BlackPlanet and AsianAve
- Obama Blog
- Text messaging to supporters (1 million people signed up to receive these)

Obama’s team rallied around his Strength Zone and built a communication machine that powered him through to the President of the United States.

So what are you going to do with your Strength Zone? Defining and living in your Strength Zone is critical to your success no matter what your role in life. There is no telling what you can accomplish if you follow this simple little strategy!

Personal Brand Statement

2009-05-05 11:57:13

An excellent way to clearly define your Strength Zone® in writing is to create a Personal Brand Statement, PBS. William Arruda and Kirsten Dixson discuss this process in detail in their book “Career Distinction”. However, a simplistic approach is to take a look at your values, personality, talents, what you do best, what activities energize you the most, where you get the most satisfaction, where you can deliver the most value, essentially your Strength Zone®, and articulate this in a brief sentence.

For example, my Strength Zone® centers around building business processes and structure, strategizing and communications…my passions are helping people find their Strength Zone®….my PBS could be:

I use my extensive marketplace experience in project execution, business processes, business efficiency, innovation and the Strength Zone® discovery process to lead, manage and inspire all those around me to unleash their human potential and reach their highest level of success professionally and personally.

Once you have your PBS complete, the next step in this process is to ensure that you are living the personal brand statement in every aspect of your life. The statement is no good unless you are truly modeling it.
