2010-07-25Are You Differentiated?

I was recently going through some marketing training material from Marty Neumeier specifically focused on business differentiation in the marketplace. He was proposing that the reader create a chart for their business that graphed quality of their product or service (or "level of goodness") against how different it was from its competition. The resulting chart would help the reader understand how their company can be differentiated in the marketplace.

I was prompted by this chart to take a look at my strengths and how often they were being used and how I used them to differentiate myself in the marketplace. I took this idea and plotted my strengths on the vertical axis of a graph (scale of 1 to 10) and then the frequency of the usage of the strength on the horizontal axis. Understanding that this is purely a subjective exercise, it still is very valuable. I found it quite sobering.

Each of us has invested time and energy to clearly define what our strengths are, yet few of us follow through to re-arrange our roles to maximize the use of these strengths. We have basically squandered our investment and because of that we are not properly differentiated in the marketplace. This will only cause us frustration and pain in our careers when we are not fully successful and do not live up to our potential.

I would encourage each of you to build this graph and honestly evaluate yourselves and how frequently you are using your strengths. Then you need to start making changes in the roles that you have and leverage these strengths as much as possible. As you do this, you will find yourself to be more productive, efficient, motivated and differentiated. This will propel you to realizing your true potential.

There is one right I would not grant anyone. And that is the right to be indifferent.

What is Strength Zone?

At Strength Zone we believe that every person has unique strengths that, when identified and leveraged properly, will allow you to achieve significantly more success in life with significantly less effort. This set of unique strengths is a combination of each person's Values, Personality and Talents.

Why do you need to live in your SZ

How much do you love your job? Do you end each workday feeling fulfilled? Are you confident that you are in the right position with the right company? Are you focused on activities that matter to you? Are you capitalizing on your strengths? Are you effective, and realizing your full potential? Are you having any fun?

For the majority of North Americans, the answer to these questions is a resounding “No!” Scholars and management gurus blame information overload, the pace of change, demands for instant service, downsizing, rightsizing, globalization and our new knowledge-based economy. For whatever reason, far too many of us are feeling burned out, stressed out, tuned out and turned off by the daily grind. We are living our lives in agonized mediocrity, desperately trying to avoid failure.

In order to break out of this downward spiral and live up to our full potential we must discover our Strength Zone and then redefine our approach to each role that we have in life to take advantage of this strength.

Failure to do this will result in more of the same…..continued frustration, lack of motivation, lack of purpose, low productivity and missed opportunities. Continuing like this will lead you to live a life of mediocrity at best.

However, discovering and working in your Strength Zone gives you the opportunity to unleash your true human potential and reach levels of success that you never dreamed of!

How do you discover your Strength Zone

 The Strength Zone process consists of five steps;
